Classical Ballet and Comprehensive Dancer Training Program

IDT offers a very well rounded, strong curriculum-based dance program focused on healthy technique, strengthening, artistry and how they relate to the world around them as they grown into adulthood- how does dance apply to their lives beyond the steps? Students learn correct and healthy body placement and vocabulary specific to the discipline. Students are placed according to age, ability and training track of focus. We offer less commitment requirements for recreational students, but require enough to ensure safety.

All intensive track students are invited to participate in our Performing Groups- and can still choose their training track of focus (i.e. Ballet program, jazz, hip hop focus, etc.)  Students commonly remain in a level for two years starting at level I through IV.

General Dance Style Descriptions

classes-01Classical Ballet
The foundation for all dance forms, IDT has a very strong classical ballet conservatory program with a set curriculum standard for each level. Focus is on proper body placement, dynamic movement; freedom of movement and artistry, energy, performance opportunities that include classical ballets, and contemporary and original works all part of a dancer’s performing arts training in the 21st century! Our curriculum for all classes includes life lessons and how their training applies to the child growing into responsible adults beyond the dance floor.

Teachers have different training backgrounds they are permitted to present to our students, while staying balanced with our curriculum standards and styles. We feel it’s important to expose students to different styles so that they are well equipped for auditions or diverse requests from future teachers or choreographers. Teachers meet several times a year to continue to discuss ways to improve curriculum based on needs of the students at the current time.

Pointe Requirements
Students are required to attend a minimum of three, 1.5 hour ballet technique classes per week to dance en pointe, and must have established that they have been doing so for some time before pointe shoe testing will be granted. All new students to IDT are required to have approval from the director of the school before wearing their pointe shoes to class- which includes shoe purchase approval and personal instructions on shoe sewing, preparation and care. New pointe students (under 1 year on pointe) should expect to wear their shoes 1 – 2x per week or as advised by the director.

Contemporary, Lyrical, Modern Styles
‘Contemporary’ titled dance classes at IDT are a combined curriculum of modern, postmodern and lyrical, often utilizing improvisation, floorwork, partnering and performing in bare feet. Lyrical as a dance style in itself is defined in part by a fusion of ballet and jazz, demanding technical skill, musicality and an expression of emotion. A solid, ballet-based technique, proper placement and bodily alignment are essential components. Please note in the class schedule what the focus of each class is: Lyrical, a fusion of contemporary styles, or more of a modern based class, as this will be indicated in the title.

Level I Contemporary

If your young dancer loves leaping, twirling, and swaying to modern day music, this is the class for them! Derived from Ballet and Modern technique, Contemporary is a style that allows dancers to explore themselves through Lyrical songs through technique and storytelling. These beginning dancers are welcome to register if they are concurrently enrolled in Ballet classes to hone strong technique skills to execute this style while also building healthy and correct muscle memory as budding dancers!

Hip Hop

Students are able to grasp musical elements, and complex, grounded choreography! Hip hop helps to develop a whole new level of self discipline and adaptability.

Jazz

classes-05Jazz is a true American art form and is an ever evolving dance form full of life, energy and rhythm in different styles such as Broadway, Latin, classical jazz, funk, Bollywood and more! Anything is possible! Classes explore body isolations of the head, shoulder, ribcage, feet and arms and encourage individual expression and the development of each student’s personal style. Turns, leaps and progressions are included within our extended class times as appropriate and safe per level.

Adult Open Jazz/Contemporary

Whether you are the novice or more advanced dancer, you will get your body moving in this upbeat, intermediate class! There will be a thorough 45 minute warm up comprised of classic jazz techniques as well as modern and ballet elements, followed by series of progressions ranging from remedial steps to more advanced multiple eight count combinations. Class will conclude with a dance combination and cool down. The dance combinations will range in influence, from swing to contemporary to cha cha and good old fashioned jazz! Instructors will rotate for class diversity.

Tap

Tap classes will include important elements of both “Rhythm” and “Broadway” styles, in order to teach students to be versatile in their performance skills. Choreography will fuse different dance styles into choreography and students will be encouraged to experiment on their own through student choreography opportunities and improvisation. Of course classes will include fun trick steps that are always crowd pleasers, but more importantly, focus will be on intricate and subtle steps that will challenge fine motor skills.

Musical Theater Dance

This class is open to Level II and up. Musical Theatre Dance is an exciting class that explores the world of acting and dancing. We’ll venture through the most popular shows on Broadway past and present. Come join us as we dance to some of our favorite musical songs like “Footloose” and “Popular.” Prepare to enjoy some fun, collaborative musical theater pieces to showcase! Select classes are followed by voice instruction.
